Schumann first mentions the Piano Quartet in a diary entry in October 1842, writing, Ive also been industrious again; a quintet in E-flat major is at the copyist, and Ive finished something else, at least in my mind, which I may not reveal to you as yet however.111 Schumann later revealed that the Piano Quartet, along with the trio later published as the Phantasiestcke, op. 88, was intended as.

Schumann’s Piano Quartet has never achieved the same degree of popularity as the famous Quintet that preceded it. Even in the composer’s own day it was far less often heard. While Clara Schumann immediately took the Quintet into her repertoire, and performed it perhaps more often than any other work of her husband’s, it was not until 1849 that she played the Quartet in public.

Schumann’s E-flat Piano Quartet often is overshadowed by the composer’s more popular Piano Quintet in the same key. Robert Schumann composed, almost in a frenzy, his two works for strings and piano during the “chamber music year” of 1842. The quintet Op. 44 and the quartet Op. 47, high lights of nineteenth century chamber music, are works of exuberant energy and romantic internalisation. The piano part which Schumann intended for his newly wedded wife, Clara, is played by Claire-Marie Le Guay on this.
There he is joined by The Elias Quartet and pianist, Simon Crawford-Phillips for a detailed breakdown of one of Robert Schumann's most popular and enduring works - the Piano Quintet in E flat, Op.44.
Schumann wrote his Piano Quintet in E-flat Major, Op. 44, in 1842 during his so-called “year of chamber music.” Schumann’s work established the piano quintet as a distinctly romantic genre and became the standard for future quintets. A handful of piano quintets existed before Schumann’s, but the instrumentation varied greatly. This disc features two pieces of Robert Schumann, the Piano Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 47, and the Piano Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 44. Both are played extremely well by the Mandelring Quartett and featuring Claire-Marie Le Guay on piano (somehow fitting given that the piano part was originally written for Robert's wife Clara to perform).Composed in 1843, this Andante and Variations is an interesting item in Schumann’s catalog. Written soon after the piano quintet and piano quartet, it is also piano-driven, scored for the unusual combination of two pianos, two cellos, and one horn.
